Settling Into Simplicity: Finding Home by the Willapa River
After the storms, the snow, and the road miles—peace finally finds me between the river and the sea.
After months of chasing clear skies and dry ground, I’ve finally landed somewhere that feels right. The past stretch through Eastern Washington was beautiful but rough being snowed in for what felt like forever. Cabin fever began setting in as I waited for roads to clear and fingers to thaw. Then came a soggy stay in a small ocean town in Western Washington, where the rain felt endless and everything seemed to drip, from the trees to my patience.
Now, I’ve settled into a quiet little spot nestled between small towns, tucked up on a mountain near Willapa river. It’s rural, peaceful, and the kind of place where time seems to slow just enough for you to catch your breath.
A new house is being set up as I write, a fresh start that feels long overdue. My son is homesteading on the property, and I’ll have my own space right there with him. There will be a cozy bedroom and a small flex living area just for me. It’s comforting to know I’ll have my own nook, yet still be close to family, the woods, and the steady rhythm of simple living.
Though I’ll take on a few camp host positions at nearby state parks and maybe some in Oregon (because the wanderer in me isn’t gone completely), my heart is ready to dig in right here. I’m dreaming of raised garden beds, dirt under my nails, and evenings spent watching the sun drop behind the trees.
There’s so much to explore like the quirky little shops, the small-town events, and all the hidden gems scattered around the river. I also plan to spend more time giving back locally; i.e., volunteering with the library, helping at the food banks, and finding new ways to stay connected with this community I’m slowly becoming part of.
It’s funny how after so many miles, so many temporary spots, and so many weather-worn adventures, the idea of staying put feels like the next great adventure. Maybe this is what “home” is supposed to feel like.
Here’s a link to my son’s homesteading channel, where he’ll be sharing updates over the next few months as the property and house come together. Yes, that name is silly, but it also fits with bare land and building it up.
He also posts product reviews related to homesteading, trailer life, and rural living. This is just one of his channels, as he’s got several others.
